Mauka Makai is Hawaiian for mountain and ocean. These two words are often used together to describe direction - mountain side or ocean side. The islands are made up of volcanic mountain ranges surrounded by ocean. Both the land and the sea give life to the people and all creatures who reside in the islands of Hawaii. They are connected and cannot be separated.
